The Alpenglow upgrade replaces Solana's existing TowerBFT consensus voting mechanism with a new system named Votor.

The Alpenglow upgrade targets a reduction in Solana's transaction finality time from approximately 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds.

Under Votor, Solana validators communicate directly off-chain to aggregate votes into cryptographic certificates rather than recording each vote as an onchain transaction.

Transitioning to Votor requires validator operators representing at least 82% of total staked SOL to sign a genesis certificate.

The mainnet activation of Alpenglow represents the largest consensus redesign and infrastructure overhaul in Solana's history.

Removing validator vote transactions from the Solana blockchain increases network capacity for user transactions, though it may reduce overall reported transaction counts.

Solana scheduled an upgrade to replace the network's legacy Tower BFT consensus mechanism on Wednesday, October 21, 2026

Solana's October 2026 upgrade replaces on-chain vote transactions with direct validator-to-validator certificate bundling

The Alpenglow upgrade scheduled for October 21, 2026 replaces TowerBFT, the consensus mechanism used by Solana since its 2020 launch, with a new consensus mechanism named Votor

During the October 21, 2026 Alpenglow migration, Solana will operate under its legacy voting system for the first 5,000 slots before transitioning to Alpenglow approximately 18 minutes later

Under the Alpenglow upgrade scheduled for October 21, 2026, Solana validators exchange votes directly off-chain and aggregate approvals into a certificate that finalizes blocks after one or two voting rounds

Prior to the Alpenglow upgrade scheduled for October 21, 2026, Solana validators submit voting approvals as transactions recorded directly on the blockchain

Decryption of pending transactions on Aptos requires a stake-weighted threshold majority of existing validators specified under Aptos Improvement Proposal AIP-144.

Aptos validators agree on transaction block ordering in the mempool while blind to transaction contents, collectively decrypting payloads only after consensus finalizes the block.

Aptos reported that transaction blocks finalize in less than one second on its mainnet consensus implementation.

StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson stated at the Token2049 conference that Starknet's transitioning to a layer 1 would give Starknet direct control over its own consensus, security model, and cryptographic upgrades

Proof-of-stake blockchains are technically capable of performing long-range state unwinds

Under the 200-millisecond configuration introduced at epoch 1053, Solana validators' uninterrupted window to order transactions in groups of four consecutive slots will shrink from 1.6 seconds to 800 milliseconds
