Bosnia and Herzegovina's ethnic power-sharing system obstructs effective democratic government

Preliminary returns placed Denis Bećirović, Darijana Filipović and Željka Cvijanović ahead in the Bosniak, Croat and Serb contests for Bosnia and Herzegovina's three-member presidency. Turnout was approximately 42%; the results had not been certified.

Bosnia and Herzegovina voted on 4 October for its tripartite presidency, national parliament and regional legislatures. The election tests rival approaches to EU accession, ethnic power-sharing and the influence of foreign governments. Preliminary presidency results have been reported.
