Frozen Russian sovereign assets should remain immobilised until Moscow agrees to compensate Ukraine

An ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine that was sparked with Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated into a full-scale invasion in February 2022, resulting in widespread casualties, displacement and significant geopolitical consequences for Europe and the world.

The Financial Times reported a US proposal to transfer some frozen Russian sovereign assets into a Washington-supervised vehicle to revive peace negotiations. European delegates reportedly rejected it. Reuters could not verify the proposal, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly insisted that the assets remain under European control.
