World Affairs holds 69,572 entities. Roughly 73% of them are claims, articles
and data blocks.
664 entities have "Gaza" in their name.
None of them is Gaza.
The space is full of commentary about the world. The objects that commentary is about
are mostly not in it.
I did not browse for this. I read 1,500 claims, extracted every proper noun the space
uses, and tested each one against the live graph. Then I counted the members of every
type declared in the space.
1. Gaza · named in 664 entities
The most-discussed place in the space. What exists is Israel-Gaza war, a Topic, and
Gaza Health Ministry, typed Company. The territory itself has no entity.
2. North Korea · named in 399 entities
Three Topics describe it: North Korea's nuclear programme, Japan-North Korea
relations, South Korea-North Korea relations. The state has no entity.
3. Taiwan · named in 264 entities
Taiwan independence exists as a Topic. Every claim about semiconductors, Chinese
military posture or US security guarantees resolves to a place that is not there.
4. Crimea · named in 228 entities
The territory whose annexation is the premise of most Russia-Ukraine claims in the
space. Nothing exists under any name.
5. Red Sea · named in 100 entities
Shipping attacks and freedom-of-navigation claims need a body of water to attach to.
6. Belarus · named in 96 entities
A co-belligerent in the Ukraine war and the staging ground for tactical nuclear
deployment. No entity of any type.
7. Black Sea · named in 94 entities
The grain corridor, the naval incidents and the Montreux question all resolve here.
8. Abraham Accords · named in 42 entities
The normalisation framework every Gulf-Israel claim is measured against. The Treaty
type holds 22 members and this is not one of them.
9. South China Sea · named in 41 entities
The most contested maritime space on earth, and the space cannot represent it.
10. Bab el-Mandeb · named in 22 entities
The second chokepoint. With only Hormuz, the space can describe one pinch point on
global energy and not the other.
Named in = entities in this space whose name contains the term. Every candidate was
checked for synonyms and alternate names. Two were dropped from an earlier draft when
that check found them present: the NPT exists as "Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of
Nuclear Weapons", and the JCPOA as a Topic called "Iran nuclear deal".
This is the pattern that produced the list.
Israel-Gaza war is a Topic. Gaza is not an entity.
Taiwan independence is a Topic. Taiwan is not an entity.
North Korea's nuclear programme is a Topic. North Korea is not an entity.
Iran nuclear deal is a Topic, not a Treaty.
Gaza Health Ministry is typed Company.
A Topic is a subject heading. You cannot give it a population, a capital, a border or
a coordinate, and you cannot ask which claims are about that place rather than about
the conversation surrounding it.
The other seven on the list have no near-miss at all. Nothing under any name.
These are all seven members of the Place type in World Affairs:
Bushehr nuclear power plant
Meridian Exhibition Center
Gimhae Air Base
Vatican
The Kremlin
Isfahan nuclear complex
Strait of Hormuz
One maritime chokepoint, and it only got an entity because the Iran war forced the
issue. World affairs runs on roughly eight. Suez, Bab el-Mandeb, the Taiwan Strait,
Malacca, Panama, the Red Sea, the Black Sea and the South China Sea are all absent.
The same shape appears in Treaty, which holds 22 members, every one an older
multilateral convention. The Abraham Accords, the Budapest Memorandum and the Minsk
agreements are all missing.
While checking what was absent I kept finding things that exist too many times, or
under the wrong type:
Iran · 13 copies, 10 of them carrying no type at all
Russia · 12 copies, 8 untyped, one typed City
United States · 11 copies, 8 untyped
Ukraine · 7 copies, 6 untyped
Israel · 6 copies, typed Person
Strait of Hormuz · 6 copies spread across Page, Place, Person and untyped
Hezbollah typed Project, Hamas typed Topic
This is the same gap from the other side. Adding the ten above means drawing relations
to Iran or Russia, and there is no single correct target to draw to.
Everything came from the public GraphQL endpoint, with no special access.
Exact type counts came from entitiesConnection(spaceId, typeId){ totalCount }.
Existence was tested with entities(filter: {name: {is: "..."}}), scoped to
this space, in both long and short form.
Mention counts came from filter: {name: {includesInsensitive: "..."}}.
Two traps caught me, and both are worth passing on:
Paging silently truncates. entities(offset:) caps near 1,000 rows, which makes
a large type look complete. Use the connection count instead.
Filtering on types hides untyped stubs. My first pass reported Iran as missing,
because all ten copies of it carry no type and a type filter drops them. Absence and
typelessness look identical unless you check for both.
