Barack Obama's campaign appearances remain essential for mobilizing Black voters in Detroit

Federal and state elections held midway through a presidential term, deciding control of Congress and many governorships. Turnout falls well below presidential years and the president's party usually loses ground, which makes them a standing referendum on the sitting administration.

Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign in Detroit on October 24, 2026, with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson. The event falls 10 days before Election Day, as Democrats defend an open Senate seat and the governor's office.
