Automation
Use of AI to perform repetitive tasks. Improves efficiency and reduces manual work.
The topic of automation has evolved from simple, rule-based processes into highly sophisticated Intelligent Automation (IA) and agentic systems that can reason, make decisions, and execute complex workflows autonomously.
Types of Automation
Modern automation is generally categorized into three distinct levels:
Traditional Automation (RPA) : This is rule-based and deterministic, following a "when X happens, do Y" logic. It is highly reliable for repetitive, predefined tasks like moving data between systems or triggering standardized emails, but it has no ability to interpret context or exercise judgment.
AI Automation : Unlike traditional methods, AI automation is probabilistic rather than deterministic. It adds a layer of judgment, allowing systems to evaluate inputs, handle exceptions, and produce variable outputs based on context, such as classifying support tickets by urgency or drafting personalized outreach.
Agentic Workflows : Considered the "natural evolution" of Generative AI, agentic systems function with a high degree of autonomy. Instead of just responding to prompts, these agents can set goals, plan multi-step strategies, monitor their own outcomes, and interface with other enterprise applications to complete end-to-end workflows.
