Conversational AI
Systems that enable dialogue between humans and machines. Used in chatbots and virtual assistants.
Conversational AI refers to technologies that enable machines to engage in natural, human-like dialogue. It encompasses chatbots, virtual assistants, and voice-based systems that can understand user intent, maintain context across multi-turn exchanges, and generate coherent responses. The field draws on natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition, dialogue management, and increasingly, large language models to move beyond rigid, rule-based interactions toward fluid, context-aware conversations.
Modern conversational AI systems such as customer service agents, voice assistants like Alexa and Siri, and general-purpose AI assistants are used across industries including healthcare, finance, education, and e-commerce. Key challenges in the field include handling ambiguity, maintaining long-term conversational memory, grounding responses in accurate knowledge, and aligning system behavior with user expectations and safety requirements. Advances in transformer-based models have dramatically improved the quality and versatility of conversational AI in recent years.
