Polygon’s zkEVM chain, previously known as Hermez, incurred over $1 million in annual losses and was eventually shut down despite a $250 million acquisition in 2021.
Jordi Baylina, co-founder of Polygon, announced on X that Zisk will focus on developing low-latency, open-source zkVM proving technology, designed for real-world applications like decentralized exchanges and gaming.
The Zisk team has been incubating the zero-knowledge project inside Polygon Labs since May 2024 before formalizing its spinout in June 2025.
Blockchain Researcher Lorenz Lehmann criticized Polygon for quietly abandoning the zkEVM chain after investing heavily in its development.
Polygon co-founder Jordi Baylina transferred all Zisk intellectual property, including the zkEVM codebase, to SilentSig GmbH, a Swiss entity he wholly owns.
