Takayama

Mountain town in the Japanese Alps, whose Sanmachi quarter preserves dark-timber merchant houses and sake breweries from the Edo period. Twice a year its streets fill for a float festival famous for ornate, centuries-old wheeled shrines paraded through the old town.
