Bayonne

Basque city in southwestern France at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, just inland from the Atlantic. The capital of the French Basque Country, it is famed for its cured Bayonne ham and a four-century chocolate-making tradition introduced by Jewish refugees from Spain. Vauban's ramparts and a Gothic cathedral with one of France's largest cloisters ring its colourful old town.
