Veliko Tŭrnovo

Medieval city on the Yantra River in central Bulgaria, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393. Its old town climbs steep terraces above the river's gorge, dominated by the hilltop Tsarevets fortress — seat of the Bulgarian tsars and patriarchs — until the Ottoman conquest ended its golden age.
