Former imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years, set in a basin ringed by wooded hills. Some 1,600 Buddhist temples and hundreds of shrines fill the city — among them the gold-leafed Kinkaku-ji — alongside preserved geisha districts and a UNESCO-listed ensemble of monuments.
