Mekele

Capital of Ethiopia's Tigray region, set on a highland plateau in the north at over 2,000 metres. Once a seat of Emperor Yohannes IV in the 19th century, it is a gateway to the surrounding rock-hewn churches and the Danakil Depression, and bore the brunt of the devastating Tigray war of 2020–2022.
