Safed

Israel's highest city, perched at around 900 metres in the mountains of the Upper Galilee. One of the four sacred cities of Judaism, it became the world centre of Kabbalistic mysticism in the 16th century, when scholars expelled from Spain settled here, among them Rabbi Isaac Luria. Its cobblestone old quarter of ancient synagogues and an artists' colony looks out over the Sea of Galilee.
