Veliky Novgorod

One of Russia's oldest cities, on the Volkhov River, long regarded as a cradle of Russian statehood. Its riverside Kremlin holds the 11th-century St Sophia Cathedral, among the country's oldest stone churches, and the city's medieval monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
