Arles

City on the Rhône in Provence, southern France, rich in Roman monuments — its great arena still stages events — and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Van Gogh spent his most prolific year here in 1888–89, painting the Café Terrace and Starry Night over the Rhône; the wild Camargue begins just beyond.
