San Lorenzo de El Escorial

Town in the Sierra de Guadarrama, 50 kilometres northwest of Madrid, built around the vast granite Royal Monastery commissioned by Philip II between 1563 and 1584. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the austere complex combines palace, basilica, royal mausoleum, library, and monastery in one severe Renaissance ensemble — the defining monument of Spain's imperial Golden Age.
