Artificial Intelligence (AI) now enables the mass creation of what have become known as “deepfakes”: synthetic videos that closely resemble real videos. Deepfakes contribute toward generalized online disinformation, indeterminacy and cynicism, further intensifying recent challenges to online civic culture in democratic societies.
