Boule de Suif

A long short story published in 1880 in the collective volume Les Soirées de Médan, set during the Franco-Prussian War. It made Maupassant’s reputation almost overnight, drew lavish praise from his mentor Flaubert, and is often cited as one of the finest examples of French naturalist short fiction.
