A semi-autobiographical Beat novel published in 1958, the year after On the Road made Kerouac famous, and one of his most popular books. Rooted in mid-1950s San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest wilderness, it helped carry Beat ideals into the 1960s counterculture and broadened popular awareness of Zen Buddhism in the West.
